Early life

LL cool j was born on 14th January 1968 in Bay Shore, New York. To Ondrea Griffith and James Louis Smith Jr., he was raised in a middle-class family and spent a miserable childhood as he saw his father killing his mother and grandfather.

He started rapping at the young age of nine years only. He was inspired by the hip hop group the treacherous three. At the age of sixteen, he started demo tapes at his grandparent’s home.

His grandfather who is a jazz saxophonist also bought him turntables audio mixer and an amplifier of worth 2000 dollars. His mother also supported him in his interest which he pursued as a career. She also bought him a Korg Drum Machine using her tax refund.

LL Cool J married Simone Johnson in the 1980s. The couple gave birth to a son and three daughters.


LL Cool J started his career as a rapper at the young age of 16 years when he met the famous Rick Rubin. Their duo did great business by Releasing I Need A Beat. This single was later sent to Russell Simmons an artist manager who was impressed listening to a brand new hit.

The same year Def Jam recordings came into being in collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rubin, which helped LL to record more music.

He was dropped out of school due to his passion and attention towards music. Later he released his first album Radio in 1985 and received a lot of appreciation and praise for its strong lyrics.
