Boychuk started his career in 1997 when he played for Quebec international pee-wee hockey tournament with a minor ice hockey team from the Edmonton.

He was the one who drafted in the National Hockey League at 61. He made his professional appearance by joining the Hershey bears in the 2005 and 2005 seasons. After that, he joined the Avalanche Organization and spent almost four years playing primarily for the affiliates of the American Hockey League (AHL).

He made his first appearance in NHL in 2007 and the 2008 season against the NewYork islander. At this point, he made his debut playing as a forward player on the wing rather than his usual defenceman position.

The same year he was transferred to Boston Bruins in replacing Matt Hendricks. He made his mark there and was titled as AHL player of the week just in his first week of the performance. He played a breakout season and held Eddie Shore Award for his exceptional performance and as a leader being named to the AHL’s first all-star team. Besides this, he also achieved amazing victories in several seasons.

He resigned from the contract with the bruins for the next 2009-10 season. He played well and established himself within the bruins with a two-year contract extension. Being a member of the bruins he defeated Vancouver Vanucks and won the 2011 Stanley Cup. This made him win the three-year extension of the contract.

In 2014, he was traded to the NewYork islanders due to the salary cap constraints. Being an islander he won against Carolina hurricanes. In 2015 he got a five-year extension with the Islanders which will last up to 2021-22 season.
