Boychuk started his career in 1997 when he played for Quebec international pee-wee hockey tournament with a minor ice hockey team from the Edmonton.
He was the one who drafted in the National Hockey League at 61. He made his professional appearance by joining the Hershey bears in the 2005 and 2005 seasons. After that, he joined the Avalanche Organization and spent almost four years playing primarily for the affiliates of the American Hockey League (AHL).
He made his first appearance in NHL in 2007 and the 2008 season against the NewYork islander. At this point, he made his debut playing as a forward player on the wing rather than his usual defenceman position.
The same year he was transferred to Boston Bruins in replacing Matt Hendricks. He made his mark there and was titled as AHL player of the week just in his first week of the performance.
